Benefits of Exercise for Seniors
Regular exercise is an important part of our well being, particularly for those who are senior. Staying fit and healthy can improve our quality of life and has many health benefits for our body and mind, such as;
- Improving cardiovascular health – Regular exercise and physical activity for adults and older adults reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 35%.
- Reducing anxiety and depression – Moving your body will release serotonin and can help to reduce muscle tension which will help to ease feelings of anxiety and depression.
- Preventing falls – Exercise can help to reduce the risk of falls, injuries and potential hospital admissions.
- Improving sleep – Exercise can help to induce physical fatigue which then assists with better sleeping patterns. In return, this increases your mood and self-esteem.
- Improving strength – If we are not regularly moving our bodies, our muscles gradually begin to deteriorate and our muscles begin to waste. Regular exercise can improve flexibility which is essential in order to reduce discomfort.
You can find out further information on exercise and being active for the over 60s on the Age UK website.
At East Anglia Care Homes, we recommend that you start a new activity such as walking in our outside space and gardens, slowly and not overexert yourself in order to prevent injury or strain. Gentle exercise is a fantastic way to connect with fellow residents and to start feeling the health benefits.
Please contact one of our members of staff if you would like any further information on the activities and events we hold within our care homes at both Halvergate House (North Walsham) and Sutherlands (Wymondham).
